ALTON, Iowa -- Marcella A. "Myrt" Hansen, 73, of Alton died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, Iowa, following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Rosary Society, and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hansen was born Feb. 27, 1929, in rural Remsen, the daughter of Peter and Olga (Krieps) Nilles. She was raised in the Remsen area and received her education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen, from which she graduated in 1946. She also attended Western Union College in Le Mars, Iowa, from which she obtained her teaching certificate. She then taught rural school in Plymouth County.

She married Norbert Hansen on Aug. 21, 1950, in Remsen. They made their home near Alton, where they farmed until moving into Alton in 1988. She was employed at several businesses in Orange City, including the Bakery and Harkers for several years.

She had been a resident of Heritage House Nursing Home since March 11, 2002.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the church guild, St. Mary's Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed gardening, bowling, golfing and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Sandi and Jeff Reed of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Peggy and John Flucke of Overland Park, Kan.; five sons and their wives, Ken and Diane of Smithville, Mo., Duane and Lori of Granville, Iowa, Ric and Janet of Alton, Randy and Denise of Kansas City, Mo., and Russ and Michele of Marcus, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Nilles of Remsen, and Clarice Bainbridge of Kingsley, Iowa; seven brothers, George, Lorne and his wife, Florence, all of Remsen, Dennis and his wife, Bev, Mark and his wife, Jean, all of Brunsville, Iowa, Stanley and his wife, Shirley of Kingsley, Peter "Bud" and his wife, Judy, and Tony and his wife, Julie, all of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, David Westmoreland; and a sister, Ruth Grage.

Pallbearers will be Dennis, Stanley, Peter, Mark, Lorne and Tony Nilles.
