SPENCER, Iowa -- Arnold D. "Arnie" Clark, 74, of Spencer passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, with the Rev. C. Peter Maisenbach officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Monday in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 6 p.m., at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Arnold Dwayne Clark, the son of William Russel and Minnie (Jurgenson) Clark, was born Feb. 19, 1931, in Akron, Iowa. He attended Akron schools, and following graduation was employed in grocery retail.
On June 22, 1952, he was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Lockwood, a local school teacher who grew up in Burt, Iowa. The wedding took place at the Methodist Church in Burt.
On Oct. 14, 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict. He ended his service to his county on Aug. 25, 1954. Upon returning to the states, he resumed his work in grocery retail until 1960. He enjoyed a successful career in the insurance business for 40 years. His career began with the Equitable Life Assurance Society. He was the owner of Clark Insurance Agency in Milford, Iowa, until retiring in 2000.
His interests in the community included enthusiastic support for Spencer Tiger sports, Lions Club, PALS and the American Field Service. He served as a state board member of the American Cancer Society for 15 years and served a term on the Spencer City Council. As an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 40 years, he served as president of the church council, head usher, building fund treasurer and co-chair of the church's centennial celebration.
He enjoyed planning many vacations both here and aboard. He always shared his love of travel with his loving wife, Shirley. He enjoyed fishing and playing bridge. His concern of others and his caring heart were exemplified through his many acts of kindness toward the less fortunate.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley; three daughters and their husbands, Rochelle and Bill Lamport of Leesburg, Va., Jennifer and Pat Schomberg of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Colette and Leo Rossiter of Spencer; eight grandchildren, Luke Lamport of Houston, Texas, Caitlyn Lamport of Lawrence, Kan., Abby Schomberg of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Allison and Joe Schomberg of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Elizabeth Rossiter of Iowa City, Iowa, and Emily and Erin Rossiter of Spencer; a nephew, Darrell Oltmanns of Elkhorn, Neb.; and a sister-in-law, Dotty Clark of Akron, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven William Clark in 1958; his parents; a brother, Lloyd; and two sisters, Opal Schmidt and Berlien Pahl.
Pallbearers will be Bill Lamport, Pat Schomberg, Leo Rossiter, Luke Lamport, Joe Schomberg and Darrell Oltmanns.
