James H. Burkett, 88, of Sioux City died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Fechner officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Burkett was born May 17, 1914, in rural Merrill, Iowa, the son of William H. and Josephine (Pavlovic) Burkett. He attended Liberty Consolidated School and graduated from Iowa State University in 1938, with a bachelors degree in dairy industry.

He married Lucille L. Lehman on April 24, 1941, in Sioux City. He was employed with Sioux City Department of Health as chief sanitarian, eventually resigning from there. He became the owner and operator of Northwest Iowa Milk Sanitation Unit. He retired in 1979.

He was a founding member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he held multiple offices in the church ,including president. He was a former member of the Sioux City Lions Club. He also served in the Lutheran Hospital board of directors, where he was chairman for 12 years. For a few months during that time, he served as interim administrator of the hospital. He was a 50-year member of the Iowa International Milk Food Environmental Sanitarian's.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; two sons and their wives, Ronald and Sonja Burkett of Westfield, N.J., and J. Douglas and Janet Burkett of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Judith and John Haviland of Minneapolis; four grandchildren, Austin, Anne, Jeremy and Sydni Burkett; and a great-grandchild, Gabrielle Burkett.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Albert Burkett; and a sister, Josephine Kelm.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Austin, Anne, Jeremy and Sydni Burkett.
