ALAN CONOVER
Alan Conover, 18, Westmar College freshmen and son of Mr. and Mrs. John Conover, LeMars, was killed in a one car accident a half mile south of Prairie City early today, according to a report by the Highway Patrol.
The accident took place before 1 a.m. Friday (Jan. 27, 1967.) Dwain DeGroot, 20, of rural Mitchellville died at 4 a.m. today from injuries received in the same accident.
Another passenger, Tom Stravers, 20, of Prairie City, also a Westmar student, escaped serious injuries. A spokesman for the Prairie City News told the Daily Sentinel that Stravers was treated at a doctor’s office and released.
Alan was listed as the driver of the car. He was a weekend guest in the Straver's home.
The investigating officers said Alan was killed when the car struck an icy spot on the highway, went over an embankment and struck a utility pole.
DeGroot was taken to Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, where he died. The accident took place between midnight and 1 a.m., the officers reported.
Funeral arrangements for the LeMars youth are pending at the Luken Funeral Home. The body was taken to the Johnson Funeral Home at Prairie City and will be flown to LeMars by Bennie Hahn of the LeMars Airport.
Alan's father operates a grain truck line and was not in LeMars when Mrs. Conover was informed of the fatal accident.
DeGroot was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred DeGroot of rural Mitchellville. A Prairie City News reporter said the young man was a star athlete and active in most sports, when he attended high school there.
Young Stravers is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stravers, rural Prairie City.
Alan was born June 4, 1948, at LeMars. He was a 1966 graduate of LeMars Community high school where he was outstanding in football and other sports.
Survivors are his parents; a brother, John Jr., a sophomore at Westmar, and his grandmother, Mrs. H. B. Conover, all of LeMars.
