Mary Elizabeth O'Toole, 73, of Le Mars, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, following a brief illness.

Mary was born May 7, 1931 in Le Mars, the daughter of the late Dr. Larry O'Toole and M. Magdalen "Tod" (Hoffman) O'Toole. She was raised in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1949. She then attended Rosary College in River Forest, Ill., and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, which is now the University of Northern Iowa. She was a longtime school teacher and had taught at Independence, Fort Dodge, Sioux City, and Le Mars. She taught school for 40 years, most of them in Le Mars. Mary had influenced and touched the lives of many people, not only through her career in education, but as a friend.

Mary was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She had also been a member of many other educational associations and social clubs including: Le Mars Community Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, and the American Association of University Women. Mary also belonged to Chapter AO of T.T.T., Toastmistress Club, Women's Club, E.O.T., and numerous bridge clubs.

She always enjoyed playing bridge and going to the opera in Omaha.

Survivors include four siblings: Larry O'Toole and his wife, Ruth of Oakdale, Minn., Ann Hoeksema and her husband, Dennis of River Forest, Ill., Tim O'Toole and his wife, Gail Wolfe of Chicago, Ill., and Dan O'Toole and his wife, Jane of Oelwein; two nieces, Jennifer O'Toole and Jeneane O'Toole-Stepan and her husband, Wayne, all of Iowa City; a nephew, Patrick Wolfe of London, England; and a great-niece Magdalen O'Toole-Stepan of Iowa City.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Larry O'Toole and Tod O'Toole.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. James Tigges presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Monday) at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars. A Catholic Daughters rosary will be held at 5 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
