Albert W. "Ab" Hunter, 94, of Kingsley, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Albert Wesley Hunter was born May 13, 1909 at Washta, the son of Albert and Mary Hunter. Ab graduated from Washta High School in 1927. Following his education, he worked for the Central Telephone Company in northwest Iowa. In 1929, Ab and Dorothy Barkley were united in marriage at Homer, Neb. Ab later drove a school bus in the Grand Meadow area (rural Washta). In 1942, the family moved to Belmond where Ab resumed his work with Central Telephone. In 1948, he was transferred to Kingsley, where he was the local manager of the telephone company until his retirement in 1974. He moved to the Kingsley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Nov. 14, 2000.

Albert was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church. He was blessed with a wonderful singing voice and performed solos on several occasions. At the nursing home, he enjoyed listening to Big Band music with fellow residents. Ab was also a skilled woodworker and crafted 75 grandfather clocks which are spread throughout the country. He and Dorothy enjoyed spending the winter months in Tempe, Ariz.

Survivors include a son, Ronald W. Hunter of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Janice Beal and her husband, Jim, of Strawberry, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren, Mark, Steve, Ron, Tom and Heather Hunter, Ann Thariani, Kenneth Anderson Jr., Mitchell, Cameron, Dennis Anderson, Traci Stewart and Kristin Weaver.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy on April 2, 1998; two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at the Kingsley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paul Evans will officiate. Burial will follow at Grand Meadow Cemetery, rural Washta. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
