SCHMIDT, BRUNKEN, LUBBEN

LE MARS, Iowa -- Marian J. Schmidt, 76, of Le Mars passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at her residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa, with the Rev. Pete Petersen officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m, at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Marian Johanna Schmidt was born Oct. 24, 1926, on the family farm in Elgin Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa, to Herman and Mary (Lubben) Brunken. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1944. Following high school, she taught country school near Seney, Iowa, for two years.

She was united in marriage to Leonard Schmidt on Aug. 29, 1946. The couple farmed west of Craig for many years until Leonard passed away suddenly on Jan. 1, 1969. She continued to live on the farm until 1976, when she moved into Le Mars. She had worked at Fashionette and Sitzmann-Oostenink Reality and Auction until her retirement in 1991.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Craig and had been active in W.E.L.C.A. and the women's circle. She enjoyed volunteering at Plymouth Manor Care Center, Human Services, Floyd Valley Hospital and being a Senior Peer Helper. She also enjoyed playing cards with her family and her many friends. She enjoyed traveling, from day trips to vacations with family and friends. She was a gifted cook and talented card player. On of her greatest joys was the love of her grandchildren.

She will be lovingly remembered by her four children and their spouses, Joyce and Jim Brownmiller of Le Mars, Russell and Donna Schmidt of Craig, Gary and Deb Schmidt of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mark and Carolyn Schmidt of Le Mars; 10 grandchildren, Brent Brownmiller, Hope Majeres, Todd Brownmiller, Jon Schmidt, Adam Schmidt, Andy Schmidt, Danielle Schmidt, Dylan Schmidt, Kyle Schmidt and Carly Schmidt; three great-grandchildren, Josie Brownmiller, James Brownmiller and Haley Majeres; a sister and her husband, Esther and Ray Renken of Le Mars; and three sisters-in-law, Loraine Schmidt of Sioux Falls, S.D., Irene Brunken of Le Mars, and Betty Brunken of Le Mars.

In addition to her husband, Leonard, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clarence and Norman Brunken; and a granddaughter, Alyson Schmidt.

Pallbearers will be Jon Schmidt, Adam Schmidt, Andy Schmidt, Brent Brownmiller, Todd Brownmiller and Andy Majeres. Honorary pallbearers will be Hope Majeres, Danielle Schmidt, Dylan Schmidt, Kyle Schmidt, Carly Schmidt, Josie Brownmiller, James Brownmiller and Haley Majeres.
