MARCUS, Iowa -- Vernon G. Johnson, 62, of Le Mars, Iowa, formerly of Marcus, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Marcus. Visitation will begin 2 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 7 p.m., and a prayer service at 4 p.m., at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Marcus.
Vernon was born March 28, 1942, the son of Roy O. and Myra L. (Specht) Johnson. He grew up in the Marcus area, graduating from Marcus High School in 1960. He graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He started his career of teaching and coaching at Alta High School, and later moving to Luverne, Minn. He received his masters degree from the University of South Dakota before moving to Carlisle, Iowa. He taught at Carlisle School for over 30 years before retiring in 2000. After retirement he moved to Le Mars, where he helped care for his mother, Myra.
Survivors include his mother, Myra Johnson, of Le Mars; two sisters, Betty Kommes and her husband, Leonard, of Le Mars and Patty Laubenthal and her husband, Dave, of Spencer, Iowa; and two brothers, Wayne Johnson and his wife, Teresa, of Greeley, Colo. and John Johnson and his wife, Marirose, of Marcus.
He touched the lives of numerous people, his most cherished and memorable moments were those which he spent with his eight nieces and nephews. They are Brent, Angela and Heidi Kommes, Katie and Jessica Johnson, Lindy, Adam and Dilan Laubenthal. He loved teaching and sports.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy; an infant brother; a sister, Linda; and a niece, Ashley Johnson.
