SERGEANT BLUFF -- Carl O. Bode, 76, of Sergeant Bluff died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at a Sioux Falls, S.D. hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nativity Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Cemetery in Mapleton, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Loren-Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary at 5:30 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel in Sioux City. Visitation will resume at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Bode was born Feb. 5, 1926 in Remsen, Iowa, the son of Matt and Clara (Oswald) Bode. He attended school in Remsen and later in Mount Carmel, Iowa. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in World War II, during which he saw extensive duty in Europe. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He married Rita M. Schleis on April 15, 1953 in Mapleton. He had various business ventures and was a former member of the Painters Union. Later, he worked as a custodian for the Sergeant Bluff-Luton School system, where he retired in 1990.

He was a member of Nativity Catholic Church in Sioux City and a member of the American Legion in Denison and Remsen.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years; a daughter, Carla Cleveland and her husband, Don of Sergeant Bluff; three sons, John and his wife, Jill of Sergeant Bluff, Dan of Sloan, Iowa and Jim and his wife, Kim of Centerton, Ark.; a sister, Elizabeth Uribe of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Douglas and a sister, Monica Konz.

Pallbearers will be Dustin Cleveland, Jason Cleveland, Shane Bode, Brett Bode, Bob Halterman and Sergio Ceriani.
