REMSEN, Iowa -- Harry R. Beck, 76, of Remsen died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, Iowa, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 220 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 of Remsen. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters rosary at 8 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Beck was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Remsen, the son of A.M. and Regina (Wenner) Beck. He was raised in the Remsen area and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from June 24, 1942, to Jan. 5, 1946, having served in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. He received three overseas bars, European, African and Middle Eastern Theater ribbons with four Bronze Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

He married Ann Berendes on Sept. 17, 1946, in Remsen. They made their home in Remsen, where he worked in Beck's Store, owned a sundries store and worked for Ross Motors. In 1958, they moved to Granville, Iowa, where he purchased Beck's Store there. In 1980, he was appointed rural mail carrier after being a substitute for 19 years. They moved back to Remsen in 1987.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, charter member of Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, all of Remsen, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5347 of Granville, and a member of the board of directors at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters and their husbands, Debby and Rich Ruden of Marcus, Iowa, Jennifer and Merlin Schau of Carroll, Iowa, and Julie and David Adams of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Mike of Omaha, and Pat and his wife, Kathy of Spencer, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Rita of Alexandria, Va.; and two brothers, Herb of Bella Vista, Ark., and Jim and his wife, Peg of Granville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joe in infancy.

Pallbearers will be Matt Beck, Alan Ruden, Hustedt Ruden, Scott, Tim and Toby Schau.
