LE MARS, Iowa -- Raymond R. "Abe" Atwood II, 77, of Le Mars passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at The Abbey in Le Mars.
The body was cremated. Memorial services will held in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Raymond Reginald Atwood was born at home in Le Mars on Sept. 12, 1927, to Raymond R. and Rosina S. (Bauerly) Atwood. He was raised in Le Mars and graduated from Central High School in 1946. Following his education, he worked in the family business, Atwood Floral in Le Mars.
He volunteered for service in the U.S. Army in 1946. He was assigned to Headquarters Company, 1180th Combat Construction. He served overseas with the U.S. Occupation Forces in Japan. He would return to Le Mars and joined Co. K, 1st Battalion, 133 Infantry (later Co. A) of the Iowa National Guard in Le Mars. He served with this unit until 1963. He attained the rank of first sergeant prior to his honorable discharge.
Following the service, he continued his education at Westmar College in Le Mars and earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1951. He moved to Marshall, Iowa, where he taught art at a high school level. He then relocated to Webster, Iowa, and became a professor of art at Iowa Central College. He instructed college students for 23 years. During this time, he studied at the University of South Dakota at Vermillion and obtained his master's degree in 1967.
He was a founder of the Northwest Iowa Genealogical Society and an officer of the Siouxland Mineral Society.
He is survived by a nephew, Richard Brouillette of Wheatland, Mo.; a niece, Rosalie (Brouillette) Lade of Campbell, Calif.; 11 grandnephews; a grandniece; and 20 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vida (Atwood) Brouillette; and a niece, Ramonda Athens.
