CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Ralph T. Ament, 95, of Cherokee died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Tim Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Ralph was born April 4, 1909, in Cherokee, to Joseph H. and Margaret (Johnson) Ament. He attended country school and Immaculate Conception School in Cherokee.

On June 14, 1937, he married Agnes Reker in Remsen, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, with the 75th Sea-Bees. He worked as a carpenter in Cherokee for many years, building many homes. In 1965, he purchased the present family farm, which he farmed until 1995. Following his retirement, he kept busy building furniture, watching wildlife and dining out.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6125 of Encampment, Wyo. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include many nieces, nephews and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes in 1995; brothers, William, Joseph, Alphons, Emil and Alfred Ament; and sisters, Emma Reinert, Martha Ament and Bertha Ament.

He will be missed by the people that knew him well and also the talents that he takes with him.
