GILBERT BERKENPAS
Gilbert Berkenpas, 82, of LeMars, died Monday, November 30, 1998, at his home in LeMars.
Gilbert Berkenpas was born March 24, 1916, on the family farm near Castlewood, South Dakota, the son of Henry and Anna (Tammenga) Berkenpas.
As a young boy Gilbert moved with his family to farm in Sioux County. He attended country school in Sioux County. On October 23, 1941, he married Eunice Johnson at St. John's Lutheran Church in LeMars. The couple farmed north of LeMars, west of Merrill, and have been on the present farm north of LeMars since 1962. The couple farmed custom fed cattle and custom farmed in Plymouth County all of their married life.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carole and her husband, Eugene Orban, of LeMars, and Connie Arnold of Merrill; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Darla Berkenpas of LeMars; six grandchildren; three great granddaughters; three brothers, Don and his wife, Darlene Berkenpas, and Darrell and his wife, Lorraine Berkenpas, all of LeMars, and Harold Berkenpas of Sterling, Colorado; a sister Gertrude Zoerink, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Leonard, Sidney, and Richard Berkenpas and a sister Esther Faber.
General services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, ELCA, with the Reverend Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, LeMars. Visitation will be after 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) with the family present to greet friends after 7 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson funeral home in LeMars.
Pallbearers will be Troy Dempster, Bill Fischer, Brendan Berkenpas, Rick Orban, Doug Berkenpas and Darwin Berkenpas.
Memorials maybe be directed to Life Skills Training Center in LeMars.
