Douglas E. Hoffman, 60, of Le Mars, died Monday, June 6, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars after a 13-month struggle with lymphoma.

Douglas Elmer Hoffman was born Jan. 5, 1945 in Akron, the son of Elmer L. and Helen (Marbach) Hoffman. Doug was raised on the family farm east of Merrill. He attended country school in Stanton Township and later graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1964. He was united in marriage to Lilas Roehrich on Oct. 17, 1964 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars.

Doug learned the electrical trade from his father and later operated his own business, Hoffman Electric, for many years until the early part of 2000. He also worked as a salesman for Bridgeport Corporation in Sioux City selling grain bins.

Doug was past president of the Plymouth County Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC) and a board member for human rights at the Mid-Step Bluff View Home in Sergeant Bluff. Doug also coached Little League in Merrill for several years.

Doug took great pride in his children, Brent and Kyle. He loved to garden and often shared his bounty with his many friends.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Lilas Hoffman of Le Mars; two sons, Brent Hoffman of Sergeant Bluff and Kyle at home; his mother, Helen Hoffman of Sergeant Bluff; a brother, Jerry and his wife, Jean Hoffman of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Norma and her husband, George Starr of Sioux City and Karen and her husband, Thomas Johnson of Seattle, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

Doug was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Hoffman in 1998 and two infant sons.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the Rev. Dr. Klaus Raab officiating. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Thursday) with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. Inurnment will be 10 a.m. Saturday morning at Resthaven Memory Gardens, rural Le Mars.

Honorary pallbearers will be Brent Hoffman, Kyle Hoffman, Bob Williams, Walt Fuller, Mike Heuertz, Leon Holzman, Larry Radloff and Bob Schwartz.
