LeMars Sentinel,Thursday, June 2, 2005Eunice E. Berkenpas, 82, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.
Eunice Esther Johnson, the daughter of Herman and Edith (Raber) Johnson, was born Sept. 18, 1922, in Freemont, Neb. She was raised on the family farm near Craig. She was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Craig. Eunice attended country school and later graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1940.
Eunice was united in marriage to Gilbert Berkenpas on Oct. 23, 1941, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars with the Rev. L.L. Belk officiating. Gilbert and Eunice farmed near the junction of Highways 60 and 75 north of Le Mars then moved to a farm west of Merrill. In 1962, they moved to their present farm just north of Le Mars. They continued to farm until Gilbert died on Nov. 30, 1998. In February 2000, Eunice moved to the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.
Eunice was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars where she had participated in circle and sang in the choir for several years. She enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball. Eunice was very devoted to her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed caring for the animals on the farm.
Survivors include her three children, Carole and her husband Gene Orban of Le Mars, Connie Arnold of Merrill, and Jeff and his wife Darla Berkenpas of Le Mars; six grandchildren, Rick and his wife Mary Orban, Karen and her husband, Bill Fischer, Stacy and her husband, Troy Dempster, Brendan Berkenpas, Nicole Berkenpas, and Kaitlyn Berkenpas; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Eunice was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert in 1998; her parents, Herman and Edith (Raber) Johnson; and a brother, Maurice Johnson.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday morning at the church from 9 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be Brendan Berkenpas, Bill Fischer, Troy Dempster, Rick Orban, John Holton, and Mike Detloff.
