John Trobaugh, 86, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

John Thomas Trobaugh was born Feb. 14, 1920 near Westfield, the youngest son of John and Odessa (Lemming) Trobaugh. He attended country school until he was old enough to help on the family farm. On Jan. 13, 1941, John joined Company K of the Iowa National Guard based in Le Mars. On Feb. 10, 1941. he left for basic training at Camp Claiborne, La. Following basic training John served with the Allied Forces in the invasion of North Africa and Italy. John was seriously wounded near Rome, Italy and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on May 28, 1945.

John was united in marriage to Dorothy Downing on June 16, 1946, at First United Methodist Church in Le Mars. In June of 2006, John and Dorothy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

John worked as a self-employed grain trader for several years before beginning his career with Murphy and Hubbard Feeds in Sioux City until his retirement in the mid 1980s.

John enjoyed playing cards and visiting with friends. John and Dorothy enjoyed watching the grandsons play sports. He was a lifetime member of the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars. He was a longtime member of the church and had served as head usher for many years and was one of the original members of the Keystone Class at church. John enjoyed volunteering at the local nursing homes and the Le Mars Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy of Le Mars; two sons, Tom and Mark of Le Mars; a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Glen Kruse of Sioux City; two grandsons, Justin Kruse and his wife Jodee of Houston, Texas and Kevin Kruse of Sioux City; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Maxine Trobaugh of Tallahassee, Fla.; two sisters, Ethel Diaz of Claremont, Calif., and Marie Anderson of Le Mars; in-laws, Virginia and John Brangwin of Le Mars, Evelyn and Lloyd Kallsen of Le Mars, and Joyce and Stan Nervig of Marcus; and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Odessa (Lemming) Trobaugh; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Opal Trobaugh; a sister and brother-in-law, Ida and Harley Arnett; and in-laws, Betty and Carl Ahrendt.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Le Mars United Methodist Church with Reverend Mike Janes officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5:30 p.m. followed by a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
