John 'Burt' Anderson
LeMars Sentinel,Wednesday, November 8, 2006John "Burt" Anderson, 78, of Le Mars, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, while vacationing near Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
John Burton Anderson was born March 12, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of W.G. and Frances (Wood) Anderson. Burt was raised on the family farm in Union Township and graduated from Union Township Consolidated High School in 1945. Burt served his country in the United States Army from September 1946 until his honorable discharge in March 1948. Upon returning to Plymouth County, Burt farmed with his father.
Burton was united in marriage to Ruth Maass on Sept. 5, 1950, at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen. Burt continued to farm until 1960 when he became an independent over-the-road truck driver. He continued driving truck throughout the United States until his retirement in the mid-1990s. After retiring, Burt continued to drive part-time for Schuster's for a few years. He later worked part-time for The Toy Store in Le Mars. In recent years, he enjoyed being a volunteer for the Plymouth Senior Helpmates by driving people to dialysis and doctor appointments.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ruth of Le Mars; six children, Larry and his wife, Joyce Anderson of Le Mars, Joyce and her husband, Larry Vander Wilt of Sioux Center, Cindy and her husband, Steve Roosa of Le Mars, Robert and his wife, Sheri Anderson of Le Mars, Roger Anderson of Sheldon, and Laurie Paquette of Minneapolis, Minn.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Sandy Anderson of Council Bluffs; an aunt, Florence Anderson of Sioux City; in-laws: Elmer and Alma Maass of Remsen, Helen Boetjen of Remsen, Wayne and Judith Maass of Paulina, and Judy Maass of Winterset; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Burt was preceded in death by his parents, W.G. and Frances (Wood) Anderson.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars with the Rev. Drew Tomberlin officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present after 5:30 p.m. to greet friends. There will be a 7 p.m. prayer service followed by a Masonic service at the funeral home Friday evening. Visitation will continue Saturday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be Michael Anderson, Kevin Anderson, Jeff Vander Wilt, Mary Ludwigs, Jeremy Anderson, and Eric Paquette. Honorary pallbearers will be Brandi Anderson, Jennifer Van Regenmorter, Lisa Ludwigs, Katie Detloff, Maria Anderson, and Emily Paquette.
Memorial may be directed to the Presbyterian United Church of Christ, Masonic Lodge Scholarship, or the Plymouth Senior Helpmate Program.
