Vera B. Atkinson

Vera B. Atkinson, 93, of rural Merrill, died Thursday, August 19, 1999, at her home following a brief illness.

The former Vera Beatrice Gabel was born on the family farm near Merrill, on Sept. 23, 1905, the daughter of George and Sarah (Taylor) Gabel. She attended country school in Johnson Township through the eighth grade. Vera graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1924. The following year she taught country school in Preston Township.

Vera was united in marriage to Milton E. Atkinson on June 9, 1925, at the parsonage of the Rev. Frank Reed in Sioux City. They lived in Kenosha, Wis., for nine months, and then farmed with her father for one year. In 1927 they moved to a farm in Section One Liberty Township, Plymouth County. They lived there until retiring in 1969 when they built a new home on the farm.She had lived there until her death.

She was a member of First Plymouth Presbyterian Church and was elected an elder in 1995. She was selected as an Outstanding Senior Presbyterian in 1995 by the Presbytery of Prospect Hill.

She was an active member of her church and various organizations serving in many offices. She also was an active member and served in various offices in the Plymouth County Farm Bureau, Plymouth County Extension, Republican Party, Republican women's organizations, and the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Atkinson of rural Merrill; a son, Bruce Atkinson of Chicago, Ill.; her adopted grandson, Michael Logan of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters-in-law: Janet Taylor of Iowa City, and Leone Coates of Sioux City; six nieces Lila Pelelo of Merrill, Leona Thorpe of LeMars, Marcia Jacobson of Sioux City, Beverly Muir of Arlington, Texas, Barbara Kingsley of Loveland, Colo., and Janice Down of Iowa City; and one nephew, L. V. "Al" Fagan of Merrill.

She was preceded in death by her husband Milton on Feb. 8, 1986; two infant sons, Gary George and Craig Gabel; her parents George and Sarah Gabel; a brother, Cloyde Gabel; a sister, Verna Herman; and two brothers who died in infancy.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. today (Monday) at the First Plymouth Presbyterian Church, rural Le Mars, with the Rev. Randall Knuth officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitations was after 1 p.m. Sunday, at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the family present to greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m., and again from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
