Helen D. Nicholson

Helen D. Nicholson, 85, of Struble, died Thursday, April 18, 1996, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after a brief illness.

Helen Dorothy (Tracey) Dunn Nicholson was born Dec. 8, 1910, at Marcus to Johanna (Tracey) and John Dunn. She grew up in Marcus and graduated from Marcus High School in 1928. She continued her education at Westmar College, LeMars. She taught school prior to, and following her marriage to Don Nicholson in 1933. They lived and reared their family in LeMars and Struble.

Mrs. Nicholson was a member of St. Joseph’s Altar and Rosary Society and Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, holding numerous offices. She was a charter member of the Plymouth County Museum Board, and Avon representative, and an acknowledged grammarian and wordsmith. Her hobbies included crocheting, card playing, story telling and tacking the travels and activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was affectionately known as a resident of 146 Plum Street in Struble, where she was known for making plum jelly.

Survivors include: her husband, Don of Plymouth Manor Care Center; three daughters, Donna Staver of LeMars, Mary Ohm and her husband, Gary, of Orange City and Bunny of Denver, Colo.; four sons, John W. (Jack) and his wife, Sophie of Williamsburg, VA., Jim and his wife, Suzanne, of Denver, Colo., Pat of Houston, Texas, and Tim of Struble; 20 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irene Sand, of Phoenix, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Michael; two brothers, John Francis Dunn and William Dunn; a sister, Margaret Dunn, and a son-in-law, Ron Staver.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Struble with the Rev. Tim Boeckelman, the Rev. John McGuirk, the Rev. Richard Sitzmann concelebrating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation is after 2 p.m. Sunday. The Altar Society rosary will be held at 3 p.m. and a scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. at the Feuerstein Funeral Home of LeMars.
