Jean E. Stevenson.Jean E. Stevenson, 69, of Sioux City, died Friday, December 15, 2000, at Harvest Morningside Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City.
The former Jean Darville was born August 24, 1931, at Seney, the daughter of Harold and Opal (Reid) Darville. She was raised in LeMars until 1945 when the family moved to Correctionville. On July 25, 1953, she married Donald O. Stevenson in LeMars. Following their marriage, the couple lived in both LeMars and Merrill before moving to Sioux City, in 1961.
Mrs. Stevenson was involved in education for nearly 30 years, after receiving her two-year teaching degree from Westmar College in LeMars in 1951. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Plymouth County from 1951 to 1952. From 1952 to 1960, she taught in Merrill, staying home from 1960 to 1975. In 1975, she completed her four-year teaching degree at Westmar College. She taught kindergarten and first grade at Nodland School in Sioux City from 1975 to 1993.
She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, spending time with family, and traveling to the family home at the Iowa Great Lakes. From 1949 to 1959, she was an accomplished singer in the LeMars area.
Survivors include her husband, Donald O. Stevenson of Sioux City; two sons, Mark Stevenson of Sioux City and Drew Stevenson and his wife, Donna, Merrill; one daughter, Jodie Fischer and her husband, Dennis, of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Andrew, Jennifer, and Christopher Stevenson; Samantha and Connor Stevenson; and Patrick Fischer; and one sister, Joyce Hiller and her husband, Harley, of Bellingham, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Stanley Darville.
Funeral services were at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City with Reverend Leonard F. Sjogren officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.
Pallbearers were Andrew Stevenson, Dennis Fischer, Everette Posey, Don Goodenow, Milan Bragg and James Murphy.
