Longtime Teacher’s Aid
Funeral is MondayKathleen M. Oetken, 72, longtime Merrill resident, died Thursday (Sept. 5, 1991) at her home after a long illness.
Funeral will be at 1:30p.m. Monday at St. John American Lutheran Church in Merrill with Rev. Frank E. Phillip officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Sunday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Luedtke-Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars.
The former Kathleen Doherty was born Nov. 22, 1918, in Sioux City, the daughter of Michael and Mary Allen Doherty. She was raised near Inwood, Iowa, and attended Rock Valley public school, graduating in 1936. She attended Western Union College and received her teaching certificate. She taught in various Plymouth County schools.
Her marriage to Elmer W. Oetken took place June 5, 1949, at St. John Lutheran Church in Craig. After their marriage, the couple farmed for many years in Plymouth County. For 24 years, Mrs. Oetken had been a teacher’s aide3 at LeMars Community Junior High School. She retired in 1989. Mr. Oetken died Jan. 21, 1991.
She was a member of St. John American Lutheran Church and the church B-Day committee.
Survivors are a daughter, Judy, at home in Merrill; two sons, Larry and wife, Ruth of Merrill and Charles and wife Teresa of LeMars; five grandchildren, Benjamin, Trevor, Shawn Oetken of Merrill and Amanda and Adam Oetken of LeMars; three sisters, Mrs. Bernard (Rose) Kippley of Alvord, Iowa; Mrs. Monica Carmon of Sioux Falls; Mrs. Jerry (Mary Ann) Wasik of Utica, Mich.; three brothers, Donald (Bud) Doherty of Inwood; Gerald Doherty of Sioux Falls; and Robert Doherty of Inwood and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jack Doherty.
