Obituary
Mildred Gable, 92, of LeMars, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.
Mildred Maria Philips was born March 21, 1911, on a farm near Merrill, the daughter of Sam and Catherine (Weinrich) Philips. She attended country school prior to graduating from Liberty High School. She later attended a normal training course at Morningside College in Sioux City. Mildred taught country school in Plymouth County for the next three years.
On March 2, 1935, Mildred and Ralph T. Gabel were united in marriage at the parsonage of the Adaville Evangelical United Brethren Church, rural Merrill. The couple made their home on a farm in Plymouth County where Mildred was homemaker and assisted Ralph with farming. She was a lifelong resident of Plymouth County.
Mildred was a member of the Adaville United Methodist Church, rural Merrill. She was instrumental in organizing the Northwest Iowa Association for Retarded Children and served on the board of directors at Plymouth Life for many years. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph of LeMars; three daughters, Marilyn Heitman and her husband Myron, of Wiliamsburg; Jane Peterson and her husband Gary, of LeMars; and Nancy Gabel of LeMars; eight grandchildren, Deborah Hobbs and her husband Todd, Shaunda McQueeny and her husband Jack, Andrea Keefe and her husband Greg, Kyra Geraghty and her husband Mike, Daren Heitman and his wife Janet, Jeff Miller and his wife Brenda, Doug Miller and his wife Kathy, and Justin Miller and his wife Daphne; three step-grandchildren, Dawn Oleson, Lisa Brown, and Heath Peterson; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters Esther Brown and Bessie Sargent; four brothers, Art, Chester, Elmer and Bill Philips.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of LeMars, with the Rev. Jon Meredith officiating. A private family burial service will take place at Memorial Cemetery in LeMars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home with the family present from 4 to 7 p.m.
