Delia M. Whitmer

LeMars, Iowa – Delia M. Whitmer, 80, of LeMars died Wednesday in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars. The Rev. Bob Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery at Merrill. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today with the family present from 7-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Mrs. Whitmer, the former Delia Hauser, was born Aug. 23, 1906, in LeMars. She married Earl Spies Aug. 26, 1926, at Merrill. He died in 1949. She taught in rural schools in the Merrill area and she and her husband operated a grocery store in Merrill until his death. She was head bookkeeper for Groetken Trucking in LeMars until retiring in 1973.

Mrs. Whitmer was a member of Merrill United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Robert W. Spies, of Anthon; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
