Josephine M. "Jos" Treinen, 92, of Le Mars, died peacefully at her home on Monday, Dec. 26, 2005.

Josephine Margaret Treinen was born March 27, 1913, at Carroll, the daughter of Henry A. and Katherine (Mertes) Kurtzhals. She lived with her parents for a short while in Obert, Neb., before the family moved to Le Mars in 1929. Jos graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in Le Mars in 1932.

Jos and her twin sister, Philomena attended Samuel's Beauty School in Sioux City in 1934. They would open the Twin Beauty Salon in Le Mars in 1935. The sisters operated the salon until Philomena's marriage seven years later. Jos continued to operate the salon until her retirement in 2000 having attained a 65-year career in the beauty business. During those years, Jos belonged to numerous associations including the National Hairdressers and Cosmetology Association and the Sioux City Coiffure Guild. She was the recipient of the Hairdresser of the Year Award in 1972. She currently has a display at the Plymouth County Museum showing the history of her career and the tools of her trade.

On June 19, 1945, Jos and Raymond "Jim" Treinen were united in marriage at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. They made their home in Le Mars where Jos continued her 65-year career at the Twin Beauty Salon, retiring in 2000. Jim died Oct. 31, 1975.

Jos was an active member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. She served on the Altar Society and was a member of Catholic Daughters of America. Along with her church, she was active in her trade and community on a local, state and national level. Jos served as an officer with the Twin Club of Sioux City, and volunteered her spare time with the Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary.

Jos loved arts and crafts, especially designing and decorating eggs, which are also on display at the museum.

Jos is lovingly remembered by her sister Bertha Hathaway of Miles City, Mont.; numerous nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Ella Kounkel of Le Mars; a close family friend, Roman Langel of Le Mars; her recent caretakers; and although she never had any children of her own, she was a godmother to many of her family's and friend's children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jim; a brother, Albert Kurtzhals; an infant sister, Agnes; her twin sister, Philomena Petersen and her husband William; and a brother-in-law, Melvin Hathaway.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Jim Tigges will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. A rosary service will be held at 4 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass.
