Alvina and Marion DeRaad, Rural Hinton, Were Killed Late Friday Afternoon in a 2-Car Collision

Alvina and Marion DeRaad, rural Hinton, who had lived their entire lives in the area, died Friday evening (Dec. 16, 1977) in the driveway of their home on C-60 south of LeMars, rural Hinton.

Rain had started to fall just before the crash at 5:10 p.m. The accident was investigated by the Iowa highway patrol.

Mr. DeRaad, 73, was the driver of one of the vehicles and his wife, Alvina, 71, was a passenger.

The DeRaads were eastbound on the county blacktop and as the driver attempted to make a left-hand turn into the farm lane near the crest of a hill, the vehicle was struck by a car driven by David Ellison, 26, Grove, Tex. who was westbound coming over the hill.

Ellison, who is a marine recruiter working out of Sergeant Bluff, was treated and released at Floyd Valley hospital, LeMars.

The troopers said no citations were issued.

The deaths of Mr. and Mrs. DeRaad are the seventh and eighth in Plymouth County this year.

Double funeral services, under the direction of the Mauer funeral home, LeMars, was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran church, Lincoln township. Rev. Arthur Schultz officiated.

Burial was in Trinity Lutheran cemetery, Lincoln township, under direction of the Mauer funeral home, LeMars.

A son, Norman DeRaad, made immediate plans for an 18-hour flight home from Bryanston, South Africa.

Mr. DeRaad was born May 29, 1904, in Maurice to John and Minnie Raak DeRaad. He lived in Sioux and Plymouth counties all his life. He was a retired farmer.

He married Alvina Josephine Lang, Dec. 16, 1953, at Grace Lutheran church, LeMars. The couple lost their lives on their 24th wedding anniversary.

Alvina Josephine Lang DeRaad was born March 24, 1906, in Stanton township, Plymouth county, to Christian Fritz and Ida Heimgartner Lang.

The couple is survived by two sons, Leland of Highland, Mich., and Norman of Bryanston, South Africa. There are two grandchildren.

Mrs. DeRaad had taught rural schools in the county prior to her marriage. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran church and was active in church organizations. She was a district officer of Lutheran Women’s Missionary Lamplighters group, the Ladies Aid of the Hinton church and Lutheran layman’s league.

Her husband was a member of the same church and Lutheran layman’s league. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion, Hinton post.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Louise Krause and by his parents and two brothers, Alfred and Arthur.

Mrs. DeRaad was preceded in death by her parents and a sister in infancy.

Mr. DeRaad is survived by two brothers, Elmer DeRaad, Seney, and Vernon DeRaad, rural LeMars, and by two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Madden, Kingsley, and Mrs. Viola Fulton, rural LeMars.

Mrs. DeRaad is survived by a sister, Mrs. Herbert (Lydia) Ladenthin, LeMars, and four brothers, Harold and Eldon Lang, both of LeMars, and Edward Lang, Merrill, and Donald Lang, Hinton.
