MARRIED 70 YEARS
Mr. & Mrs. A. W. Crouch

LeMars, IA.—Special: A record few equal, their 70th wedding anniversary, will be observed here Monday by Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Crouch, who will hold open house from 2 to 5 o’clock to celebrate the event. Mr. Crouch is 92 and his wife is 90.

Mr. Crouch was born February 16, 1849, in Chautauqua county, N.Y., the son of M. F. Crouch and Mandana Hogel Crouch, both descendants of old colonial families. He moved with his parents to Grant county, Wis., when he was 9 years old.

A veteran of the Civil War, Mr. Crouch enlisted with Company G, First Wisconsin cavalry, in 1864, and returned to Wisconsin at the close of the war.

He married Magdalena Roesch September 15, 1871. She was born June 23, 1851, at Baden, Germany, and came to the United States with her parents when she was 6 years old. They settled on a farm in Grant county and farmed in Wisconsin until 1874, when they moved to Plymouth County. Mr. Crouch made the trip in a covered wagon.

Because of grasshoppers, they went back to Wisconsin in the fall of 1889, but returned to Iowa in the spring of 1882. Mr. Crouch bought a farm nine miles north of Sioux City from his brother, Robert Crouch, who had homesteaded the land. The land grant was signed by President Grant. When Mr. and Mrs. Crouch moved to LeMars in 1901, a son, O. W. Crouch, took over the farm. At present a grandson, Lloyd Crouch, is farming there.

Mr. and Mrs. Crouch have six children, 19 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. There has never been a death in the family.

Their record of being married 70 years is not the only one of which they boast. They also have been subscribers to the Sioux City Journal for nearly 60 years.
