“Obituary”

“Died , at her home in Rodman, on September 1, 1901, Mrs. Mary Agnes Leonard. Mary Agnes Starner, daughter of William and Rosanna Starner, was born in Perry county, Ohio, on the 28th day of February, 1843, While a child, she, with her parents, moved to Illinois, where she grew to womanhood. On the 11th day of December, 1861, she was united in marriage to J. L. Leonard, at Casey, Ill. To them were born six children, four sons and two daughters, all of whom survive her. After her marriage Mrs. Leonard resided a number of years in each of the states of Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska, coming to Iowa about six years ago and locating near Boone where she resided until the spring of 1890, when she with her husband and youngest son, moved to Rodman.

While a resident of Minnesota, she experienced religion and united with the United Brethren church at Cordova, in the year 1881. Since that time she has ever strived to live an exemplary christian life, and has fellowshiped with all christian people of any denomination wherever her lot has been cast.

About five years ago she began to be troubled with a fevere pain in her left foot which last spring resulted in an ulcer, and although she received almost constant medical attention her condition became so critical that amputation was necessary. The operation was performed by Dr. Leonard, of Whittemore, assisted by others on the 9th day of August, this, however, only prolonged her life a short time. Everything that loving friends could do for her comfort through her long and painful illness, was done. Her daughters came from their homes in Nebraska to watch with their father and brothers at the bedside, and to assist in ministering to her wants. A brother also came from Boone, Iowa, to pay her a last farewell. She was perfectly reconciled, and died with a firm trust in her Saviour. The relatives she leaves to mourn her loss are her husband and children, 11 grandchildren, one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Wm. Luscombe, at the Rodman church, where a large number of friends and neighbors assembled to pay a last tribute of love and respect to one who so short a time among them, had made many friends who sympathize with the family in their bereavement.

The remains were laid to rest at the Riverside cemetery.”
