Mary Ann Nesbitt Allen

Born Richland county, Ohio, January 29, 1843. Died, Emmetsburg, Ia., January 6, 1929. Age, 86 years, 11 months, 5 days.

Mary A. Nesbitt Allen lived in Ohio until the year 1865. With her husband she came to Cedar county (Louden), Iowa. After three years, they moved to Vernon township, Palo Alto county, Iowa, where they filed upon a homestead using the soldiers' privilege. Here through the years she made her home. She saw the farm built up little by little until it became one of the finest and most comfortable. She and her husband gave themselves to the developing country about them and truly were a part of the great land in which they were among the first pioneers.

On March 7, 1865, she was united in marriage to Hiram T. Allen at Richland, Ohio. To this union two children were born -- John Calvin and Dottie May. The daughter died at the age of 5 years and the husband passed away 14 years ago.

When but a girl she united with the Christian church and continued a member until her death. She was a Christian and her charity, hospitality, kindness, neighborliness and unswerving faith bore testimony to her belief.

Those who remain to mourn of the immediate family are her son -- John Calvin of Emmetsburg, her sister, Mrs. Sarah Danford, St. Clairsville, Ohio, her brother, John Nesbitt, Bellair, Ohio; three grand-children, Donald, Ira, and David.

The deceased was one of three children of John Nesbitt and Sarah Workman. Their names are Sarah, John and Mary Ann. The father and mother are both dead.
