H. T. Allen Dead.

Hiram T. Allen died at his home in Vernon township Sunday morning, April 6, after a severe illness of over two weeks. It was some form of kidney trouble that caused his death. He had not been well during the winter, yet he was hopeful and uncomplainingly kept up his usual cheerful manner and would not admit that he was really ill. Funeral services will be held at the home at ten o'clock this morning and the remains will be buried in Evergreen cemetery.

High (sic) Allen was born in Mansfield, Ohio, in May, 1844. There he grew to manhood. On March 7, 1865, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Nesbitt. To this union two children, a son and daughter were born. The daughter died when only a child. The son, John Allen of this city survives his father. Mr. Allen served his country as a union soldier in the civil war. The family came to this county over forty years ago and located on a farm in Vernon township where they have constantly resided since. This farm is one of the most beautiful ones in Iowa. Mr. Allen had both skill and taste in arranging and beautifying his home and surroundings and it is a model well worthy of being copied.

The writer has known Mr. Allen since our early childhood and we knew him only to respect and esteem him more highly as the years passed by. His integrity, honesty and veracity were always above question and he was a soul of honor. He was a devoted husband, a kind and indulgent father. To his friends he was the soul of good fellowship. We never remember of hearing him speak an unkind word of anyone and doubt if he ever cherished an uncharitable thought of anyone. In return people naturally had the same kindly feeling for him, and throughout his wide acquaintances he had few if any enemies. He was a man of excellent habits and fine moral character. He had a sturdy constitution and his sunshiny disposition made him most companionable. He met most of the trying conditions and situations of life with a joke. He was a practical, matter-of-fact man but had his own peculiar way of extracting merriment from life as he went along, and he was not disposed to worry about matters that could be bettered in other ways. He was a good neighbor and there was no happier family circle than his and to his home his friends always found a hearty welcome. There was nothing that he and his good wife would not do to make their home a pleasant abode for those who accepted their hospitality. The death of Mr. Allen takes from this county one of its very best citizens, a man who will always be remembered in this community. To the bereaved wife whose remaining days will be lonely indeed, and to the devoted son John Allen as well as to other relatives and friends who are grieved by this death we extend our sincere sympathy.
