Thos. Conlon Dead.

In our last issue we mentioned the death of Thos. Conlon who died at his home in the Third ward about ten o'clock Tuesday morning, Sept. 19. Funeral services were conducted by Very Rev. P. F. Farrelly at the Assumption church on Thursday morning and the body interred in St. John Cemetery.

Mr. Conlon was born at Athlone, West Meath County, Ireland, on Dec. 22, 1835, hence he was nearly 81 years of age at the time of his death. He came to America in 1854 and located at Morris, Ill., where on Feb. 1, 1861, he united in marriage with Miss Anna Muldoon. In May, 1871, they came to Palo Alto County and settled on a homestead in Great Oak township where they lived until March 1, 1898, when they moved to Emmetsburg where they have since made their home. To this union six sons and three daughters were born all of whom survive their father except one daughter, Mrs. Myles E. Mahan, who died about fourteen years ago.

Mr. Conlon was perhaps as well known as any citizen in the county. He was one of the unpretentious, mild, humble sort of men who made a success of life without any display or ostentation. As a husband and father no one could be kinder or more thoughtful than he. He was the very soul of devotion to his wife and no couple could be more companionable than they. Each was ever solicitous of the happiness and comfort of the other and both were happy when they could be together.

One by one the pioneers of the county are being called to the great beyond and the roll of sturdy, honest, reliable, self-reliant, energetic men who made up the citizenship of the state in early days is steadily decreasing. Mr. Conlon was one of these and did his part well toward providing a good home for his large family and toward the development of the county in the days when hardships and necessities make luxuries unknown. His work as husband, father, neighbor and citizen was all done and well done. His call to eternal reward was timely and yet his family will miss him and mourn his loss. Besides his aged wife, two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Kilroy of Mason City and Miss Agnes Conlon, who is at home, and six sons, Jno. H. of Leota, S. Dak., Chris and Thomas who live here, Will of Milford, Patrick of Le Mars and Michael of Minneapolis, and one brother, Michael, remain and share the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
