Another Pioneer Passes To Reward

Mrs. Lot Laughlin, One of County's Best Known Ladies

Mrs. Lot Laughlin, one of the best known ladies in our county, died at her home in this city early Sunday morning. Although she had not been particularly rugged for several years, she was able to be about and attended church the previous Sunday. Some time during the night she became ill. The attending physician in a short time found her symptoms alarming and the absent members of the family were called to her bedside. All reached home before she passed away.

The funeral was held yesterday. A requiem high mass was celebrated at the Assumption church, Very Rev. P. F. Farrelly officiating. There was an exceptionally large attendance. Many were present from surrounding towns in the county. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers John Mahan, James Kane, Robert and Joseph Mulroney, M. T. Washington and Alex Cullen.

Rose Campion was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, May 19, 1847. In April, 1872, she came to the United States and soon after located in our community. November 27, 1874, she was united in marriage to Lot Laughlin. Mr. Laughlin was one of the first settlers in our county. He came with the members of the original Irish colony from Kane county, Illinois, in the summer of 1856. He was at that eighteen years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin lived on a farm in Walnut township until January, 1900, when they sold out and built a fine home a short distance west of the Assumption church. Mr. Laughlin died three years ago last April. Mrs. Laughlin is survived by four sons and three daughters. They are Martin of Graettinger; William of Emmetsburg; Lot of Shreveport, Louisiana; P. J., who is employed in the Denver National Bank of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. William Kane of Emmetsburg; Mrs. M. F. Ryan of Mobridge, South Dakota, and Miss Rose, a trained nurse, of this city.

The death of Mrs. Laughlin takes from our community a lady who was widely known during pioneer days and one who never lost her firm hold on the affections and the good wishes of our citizens in general. For nearly half a century the spacious, hospitable, happy home of Mr. and Mrs. Lot Laughlin was a familiar name on the lips of hundreds. In community affairs, Mrs. Laughlin was always ready to do more than her share and she never sought distinction or public attention. She was humble and unpretentious and she was willing that others should have the honors, if by so doing she could promote neighborhood peace and harmony. She was, above all, a home woman. She was a willing, self sacrificing helpmate, a loving, sympathetic, tender mother, a faithful friend and a considerate, obliging neighbor. In sickness or in other times of need, she was prepared and ready to give assistance financially as well as by individual effort. She supported cheerfully and generously her church in its various charitable and practicable undertakings and she had sincere zeal for the numerous and praise worthy purposes in which its influence and its helpfulness were on so many occasions manifested. She could not understand how people could be hopeful or confident of success without making an earnest effort to cooperate with the divine in important family affairs, in educational plans and undertakings, or in hoping to reach the final end for which they were destined. Four upright, dutiful, devoted sons and three thoughtful, patient and exemplary daughters survive to cherish the memory of one of the best mothers and one of the most useful of women. That they will profit through life by all that she did for them in childhood and in their years of maturity and that they will never consider lightly the influence of her edifying and enobling example, is the well founded conviction of all who know them. The sympathy of all is extended to them in their hours of bereavement.
