Dennis Carroll Is Dead.

He Located on West Bank of Lost Island Lake 49 Years Ago

Dennis Carroll, one of the old and widely known residents of our county, died at his home in Emmetsburg township Monday afternoon. He had been seriously ill only a few days. His passing was really the result of his advanced years. The funeral will be conducted at the Assumption church, Very Rev. P. F. Farrelly will officiate. The burial will be in St. John's cemetery.

Mr. Carroll was a native of Queen's county, Ireland. He was born in 1822. In 1848 he came to the United States. He lived for a couple of years in New York, after which he came west and located near St. Paul. He was married to Miss Mary A. Walters at Inger Grove, Minnesota, in 1857. Mr. and Mrs. Carroll spent six years on a farm in that locality, after which they came to Iowa. They settled on the west shore of Lost Island Lake. The place has been known as the Anthony farm. A couple of years later they sold out and came to Emmetsburg township where they subsequently made their home. Mr. Carroll was the last survivor of a large family. Mrs. P. Lanan, who lived in this locality in the early days, was one of his sisters. We understand Mr. Carroll assisted in doing the first grading on the streets of the present city of St. Paul. Minneapolis had not been founded at the time. He is survived by his aged wife, three sons and four daughters. The sons are Patrick, Edward and Dennis. The daughters are Mrs. Henry Kneer, Mrs. Nicholas Martini, Mrs. Andrew O'Hearn and Mrs. Mathew Neary. All reside in this community. One son, Martin, died a few years ago.

Mr. Carroll was a most exemplary Christian gentleman. He was an upright, God-fearing, law-abiding citizen. He was moderate in his habits and he was prudent and reasonable in his utterances. He would not intentionally do an injustice to any person. He was a tireless worker. Not until 85 winters had frosted his brow did he hesitate to take his place with younger and stronger men in his daily efforts. He was thoughtful and obliging and he was one of the most accommodating and sympathetic of neighbors. He was a close reader and kept well posted on local and general affairs. He was pronounced in his religious views and he practiced his church duties with regularity and fervor. He was tolerant of the views of his friends and neighbors. He respected the rights and privileges of all men. He had a high regard for the laws of the state and country of which he was a citizen. He did far more than his share in the development of our county and our community and he did so cheerfully and successfully. The writer knew Mr. Carroll for many years and esteemed him highly as a friend. His aged wife and his several sons and daughters can look back over his long and edifying career, covering almost a century, with a pardonable sense of family pride and they will cherish tenderly for many, many years recollections of his charitable and manly deeds. The sympathy of our citizens in general is extended to Mrs. Carroll and the other worthy members of the family.

Dennis Carroll

Mr. Dennis Carroll died at his home in Emmetsburg township at 2 p.m. Monday after a few days of illness. He was 92 years of age and had been a well, strong man. Age was the chief cause of his death. Funeral services will be held at Assumption church at ten o'clock this morning and the remains will be interred in Evergreen cemetery.

The deceased was born in Queen's county, Ireland, in the year 1822. He came to America in 1848 and lived in New York state for about two years then moved to Minnesota living for four or five years at Inger Grove near St. Paul. In 1857 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Walters at Inger Grove. In 1865 they came to Iowa and located on what is known as the Anthony farm in Lost Island township. Two years later they moved to Emmetsburg township where they have made their home constantly since that time.

Mr. Carroll was a man of excellent habits, fine moral character and sturdy constitution. He continued to be active in his accustomed pursuits long past the age at which men ordinarily drop out of the ranks of the workers. He was a good neighbor and did his full share toward making the family circle a happy one. His best monument will be the good report he has left behind him in the community where he has lived for nearly fifty years. He is the last of a large family and leaves to mourn his loss, an aged wife, three sons, Patrick, Edward and Dennis Carroll and four daughters, Mrs. Martini, Mrs. Kneer, Mrs. Neary and Mrs. O'Hearen, all of whom reside in this county. To them we extend sincere sympathy in their sorrow.
