Died at Dubuque Mrs. Regina Steil Palo Alto Pioneer

The Funeral Was Held in Emmetsburg This Morning. Burial in St. John's.

Mrs. Regina Steil, one of the pioneer women of our county, died Sunday at 10:25 a.m., at the home of her son, Joe J. Steil of Dubuque. She became ill Thursday evening. Her decline was rapid until death came to relieve her. The remains were brought to this city Tuesday morning and were taken to the home of her son, John J. Steil. The funeral was held this morning. Services were conducted at the Assumption church at 9 a.m., the rector, Very Rev. J. G. Murtagh, officiating. There was a large attendance. The burial was in the family lot in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were M. F. Brennan, David Brodigan, Charles Nolan, Ed McNally, Thos. Higgins and Joe Mulroney.

Regina Flesch was born in Germany, December 13, 1841. She was in her 86th year. She came to the United States when quite young, locating at Lancaster, Wisconsin. She was united in marriage at that place in 1863 to Nicholas Steil. Mr. and Mrs. Steil moved from Casville, Wisconsin, in 1871, to a farm in Ellington township where they lived for many years. After retiring they located in this city. Mr. Steil died 21 years ago. Six years ago Mrs. Steil went to Dubuque to make her home with her son Joe. She is survived by five sons, three daughters, 44 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. The sons are Joe J., of Dubuque, John J. of Emmetsburg, M. F. and Matt of Tulsa, Oklahoma, N. A. of Sioux City and A. H., of Mallard. The daughters are Mrs. P. J. Martini of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, Mrs. B. F. Sullivan of Muskogee, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Jas. Daily of Parsons, Kansas. Three brothers also survive -- Nicholas Flesch, who lives in Minnesota, and John and Matt of Lancaster, Wisconsin. All of the sons and daughters were present at the funeral.

Mrs. Steil was one of the early settlers of Ellington township. When she and her husband located in that vicinity there were only a few settlers here and there in the south part of our county. Mr. and Mrs. Steil were industrious, frugal and thrifty and prospered. They secured substantial holdings and they made fine improvements. They were hospitable as citizens and neighbors. They raised a large family of sons and daughters, who grew up respected and useful members of society. After the death of Mr. Steil in Emmetsburg 21 years ago, Mrs. Steil continued her residence in our community until 1921 when she went to Dubuque to make her home with her son Joe and family. She was a careful, provident, devoted wife, a loving, considerate mother and a kind, loyal, obliging friend. She was faithful to her church and was a staunch supporter of it in its various needs. Providence spared her to a ripe old age. She passed away in the enjoyment of the good will and respect of all who knew her. Hundreds of Palo Alto friends of the family learn with profound sorrow of her death and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of her family.
