Mr. Joseph Walsh died at his home in the Third ward at 5:30 p.m. Saturday July 19. He had been ill since Christmas and for some time it was feared he could not recover. He was over 85 years of age and this of course naturally enfeebled him.

Funeral services were held at the Assumption church at ten o'clock Monday morning. Monsignor P. F. Farrelly officiated and preached a beautiful sermon. Burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Peter and Joseph Mulroney, P. C. Neary, Ed McNally, Frank McCormick and Charles Nolan.

Joseph Walsh was born in Kilkenny county Ireland on March 25, 1839. He grew to manhood there and in 1870 united in marriage with Miss Catherine Hennessy. They came to America the following year and direct to Palo Alto county. They located on a farm near Rodman and later moved to a farm in Nevada township two and a half miles east of the river bridge south of town.

Eight children were born to this union, four of whom survive their parents. There were four sons, P. J., James, Thomas and M. J. Walsh and four daughters Mrs. Patrick Brodigan, Mrs. Pete Hearity, Misses Marion and Josephine Walsh. Mrs. Walsh died twelve years ago. Mrs. Harity, Thomas and M. J. Walsh are also deceased.

Joseph Walsh was a resident of this county for 53 years. During all this time he conducted himself honestly and honorably. No one could criticize his demeanor or truthfully say aught against him. He was upright fair and straight forward in word and deed. A christian always, a devout Catholic and earnest in his zeal and devotion.

In his home he was kind and solicitous and was proud of his family. Though his death was timely and though his life's work was all and well done he will be missed by the children who survive him. Besides his three daughters, Mrs. Brodigan, Misses Josephine and Marion Walsh and two sons P. J. and James Walsh, he is survived by twenty four grandchildren. The Tribune extends sincere sympathy to them all.

Lived In County Fifty Five Years

Joseph Walsh, Whose Death Occurred Saturday Evening.

Joseph Walsh, one of the old residents of our county, who was ill for several weeks, passed away at his home in this city last Saturday evening. The funeral was held Monday forenoon. Services were conducted at Assumption church, Monsignor P. F. Farrelly officiating. Numerous relatives and old neighbors were in attendance. The pall bearers were Chas. Nolan, Ed McNally, Peter Mulroney, Joseph Mulroney, Frank McCormick and P. C. Neary.

Mr. Walsh was born in the county of Kilkenny, Ireland, March 25, 1839. His age was 85. He was married in his native community in 1872 to Miss Katherine Hennessey. A couple of months after their union Mr. and Mrs. Walsh came to the United States. They located on a farm two miles from Rodman. Two years later they took up a homestead four miles south east of this city where they resided for many years. In 1909 they game up farming and located in this city. Mrs. Walsh died twelve years ago. The surviving members of the family are Mrs. P. Brodigan, P. J. Walsh and Miss Marion Walsh of this city, James of Glasgow, Montana, and Miss Josephine, who lives at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. All were present at the funeral. Two sons, Nicholas and Thomas, and one daughter, Mrs. Peter Hearrity, passed away a number of years ago.

Though not widely known, as he was modest and moved about very little, Mr. Walsh was one of the fine old Christian gentlemen of northern Iowa. He was a kind father, a provident husband, an obliging neighbor, a staunch, upright citizen. He would not intentionally injure the feelings of any person. He met his obligations promptly and he performed faithfully and cheerfully his duties to his community, to his church, and to his country. The writer had business relations with Mr. Walsh for nearly forty years and always found him every inch a man. His life was edifying to his family and his sons and daughters grew up showing that he had provided by his good example. They have the sincere sympathy of our many readers in their bereavement.
