Death of Mrs. P. C. Nolan

She Came to Palo Alto County in Spring of 1866

Mrs. P. C. Nolan of this city died at Mercy Hospital at Dubuque early last Friday morning. Her son-in-law, Alex Cullen, on learning of her illness, left for Dubuque Thursday evening but when he reached her bedside he found that she had passed away. The remains were brought to Emmetsburg on Saturday. They were taken to Mr. Cullen's home. The funeral was held on Monday. Services were conducted at St. Thomas church. Rev. M. McNerney, the pastor, celebrating a requiem high mass. The interment was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were M. F. and W. H. Coonan, George Harrison, L. E. Conway, Philip Cullen and Joseph Mulrooney. A large number of relatives and friends were in attendance, many coming from a distance.

Miss Anastasia Knaresbrough was born in the county of Kilkenny, Ireland, August 16, 1838. Hence her age was 80. She grew to womanhood in her home community. She was married to Patrick C. Nolan in 1865. Mr. and Mrs. Nolan came to the United States on February 25, 1866. They lived for many years on a homestead north of this city. Their place was on the west shore of Medium lake. Emmetsburg was at that time 100 miles from a railroad, the closest station being Boonesboro. About 29 years ago they moved to Emmetsburg. Eight sons and daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Nolan. One, Mary Ann, died when a child, and Robert 17 years ago. Richard passed away at Mankato, Minnesota, a year or two ago and another daughter, Mrs. Alex Cullen, died October 25. The surviving members of the family are the husband, three sons and one daughter. The sons are Charles of Graettinger, Edward of Des Moines, and Frank of Chicago. The only daughter is Mrs. J. J. Martin of Ayrshire.

Mrs. Nolan was a quiet, even tempered, dutiful, conscientious old lady. She came to our country in early days and she frequently related, with interest to her listeners, her many experiences when the country was new and when privations were numerous and more or less annoying. She was a loving, helpful mother, a devoted wife, a loyal friend and a helpful neighbor. She was a practical member of her church and she was always ready to do her best in religious or community affairs. Although her health was poor for a number of years she bore her afflictions with Christian fortitude and lived to a ripe old age. The husband, the three sons and daughter and the other relatives have the sympathy of all in their sorrow.
