Alex Jennings Is Dead.

Passed Away Unexpectedly Monday Night.

Monday night, at 10:45, Alex Jennings passed away quite unexpectedly at his home in this city. He had not been well for a year or more, and a couple of months ago it was feared that the end was near. However, he gradually rallied and was able to be up and about. Monday evening he was around the house as usual and at 10:30 went into the bedroom and retired for the night. At 10:45 (words missing). The funeral will be held this morning at 10 o'clock. Services will be conducted at Assumption church. The interment will be in St. John's cemetery.

Mr. Jennings was a native of the county of West Meath, Ireland. He was born December 19, 1834. He came to the United States in 1857. He lived in the state of New York for some time. Later he moved to Morris, Illinois, where he was married to Mary Lynch, September 8, 1860. In the spring of 1870 they came to this county and settled on a farm in Great Oak township, where they remained until 1893, when they moved to Emmetsburg, subsequently making this their home. The surviving members of the family are the wife, one son, James P. Jennings, and an adopted daughter, Miss Mary Jennings. One sister, Mrs. Michael Conlon, also resides in this city. This is the third death that has occurred in the family within a few months, two sons having recently passed away.

Mr. Jennings was a plain, unassuming man and a most exemplary citizen. His life was an open book. He was a loyal, provident husband and a kind, dutiful father. He discharged quietly, conscientiously his duties in life as he understood them and, ever true to a lofty sense of honor, he retained the confidence of those with whom he mingled in the social and business world. He would not intentionally wrong any man. The writer knew him intimately and had substantial reasons for prizing highly his friendship and his good will. Would that all citizens were as upright, law-loving, and law-respecting as this good man who has just been called to his eternal reward.
