Joseph J. Schaller, 84, 1923 - 2008
Stoughton, WI — Joseph J. Schaller, age 84 of Stoughton, died suddenly at Stoughton Hospital on Tuesday, March 4, 2008. He was born on June 29, 1923 in West Bend, Iowa, a son of Joseph H. and Elizabeth (VonBank) Schaller. Joe served his country in the Army during WWII. He moved to Madison from Iowa in 1956 and began work for the City of Madison. He worked at the First Street garage as a mechanic for 26 years, retiring in 1984. On June 19, 1971, he was united in marriage to Mabel Midthun Lund. After retirement, they spent ten years in the Adams-Friendship area, and since 1994 lived in the Oregon/ Stoughton area. Together, they enjoyed winters in Benson, Arizona for 15 years. Joe was a big baseball fan.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mabel (Lund) Schaller, a daughter, Debbie (David) Birks of Citrus Heights, CA; three step-children, Karen Phillips of Stoughton, Kenneth (Debbie) Lund of Deerfield and Carleen (Lenny) Lassa of Wisconsin Rapids; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Miller of Algona, IA and Hilda Roberts of Orient, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters.
A visitation was held on Friday, March 7, 2008 from 4 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the Olson-Holzhuter-Cress Funeral Home in Stougthon with a Pass and Review by the Stoughton VFW at 6:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend, Iowa, where the family greeted friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Harris Funeral Home of West Bend handled the local arrangements.
