LAID TO REST YESTERDAY

P.H. Hand died at His Home in This City Sunday

P.H. Hand passed away at his home in this city Sunday evening about 6:30. He had been ill for about a month but his condition was not considered serious until the day before he died. For the past few years he had not been enjoying the best of health. Last winter he spent a short time at Excelsior Springs, Missouri. A few weeks ago he visited a physician in South Dakota. Medical skill was, however, of no avail. The funeral was held Tuesday morning. A requiem high mass was celebrated at St. Thomas church, Fathers McNerney, Murphy and Kelly officiating. The interment was in St. John's cemetery. A large procession of relatives and friends of the deceased were in attendance at the last sad rites. The members of the K.C. and the A.O.H. were present in a body and marched from the church to the cemetery. The active pall bearers were J.K. Benda, Peter Hoelzner, Thos. O'Connor, E.J. McEvoy, J.A. Duffy and Jos. Martini. The honorary pall bearers were Robt. Laughlin, Jas. Mulroney, M.F. Kerwick, Jos. Gossman, T.F. Rutledge and Wm. O'Brien.
Peter H. Hand was born in Allamakee County May 25, 1868. He moved with his parents to this county in the fall of 1872. He lived with them on the farm until he was about 20 years of age.
November 5, 1890, he was married to Miss Nora Murray. To this union five children were born, four of whom are living. They are Vincent, Basil, Agatha and Lewina. Cletus, the youngest child, died a little over a year ago. Besides his wife and children he is survived by his mother, Mrs. John Hand, three brothers and sisters. The latter are Mesdames Thos. Egan, Patrick O'Brien, and John Murray. The brothers are Frank, John and James.
Mr. Hand worked for Smith and Benda for a number of years and was later engaged in business with J. S. Murray. The firm enjoyed a large and substantial patronage. About seven years ago they dissolved partnership and he continued the business with his brother Frank until failing health compelled him to retire. During the past couple of years he had been a traveling salesman, covering this section of Iowa.
The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the sorrowing relatives in the loss of a loving husband and father and a worthy son and brother.
