Injuries Fatal To Mrs. Kane, 87

Mrs. M.B. Kane, 87, Ayrshire's oldest resident, died at the local hospital last Friday as the result of injuries received in a fall at her home nearly three weeks before.  Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic church in Ayrshire at 10 o'clock Monday morning with the Rev. Father Schroetiner, pastor, officiating. Interment was in Calvary cemetery, Ayrshire, with the Martin Funeral home in charge of arrangements.  Pallbearers were Joe Antoine, Charles Conlon, Clem Hand, Ed Farrell, Herman Cottington and Gerald Higgins. Catherine McGowan was born in Dyersville, Iowa on August 31, 1963, the daughter of William and Catherine Young McGowan.  Catherine lived with her parents as a young women and remained in the parental home, caring for them until their deaths.  Later she kept house for various priests in this state. She married M.B. Kane in Ayrshire and the couple made their home there.  Mr. Kane died several years ago.   They did not have any children.  Mrs. Kane was called Aunt Kate by her many nieces and nephews and everyone who knew her. She took great pride in her home and always had a large flower and vegetable garden until late years, when her health began to fail.  A devout Catholic, she attended church regularly.  Despite her age, she retained her bright sense of humor and zest for living that her many friends admired.Mrs. Kane lived in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Kane here from December of 1949 until May 15 of this year. In May she returned to her home in Ayrshire.  On Sept. 4 she fell and suffered multiple fractures.  Brought to the local hospital, she gradually grew weaker and it was known she could not recover. Mrs. Kane leaves several nieces and nephews, William McGowan, Dyersville, Frank McGowan, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. John Hand (Katie Higgins), Mahnomen, Minn., Miss Margaret Higgins, Minneapolis, Minn., Bert Higgins, Spencer, Mrs. Leo Schany (Loretta Higgins), Graettinger, John Higgins, Carlew, Mrs Gene Kane (Mary Higgins) and Charles Higgins, Emmetsburg.  Also  surviving are several grand-nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law living in Dubuque, who was unable to attend the funeral because of poor health. Mrs. Kane is preceded in death by three brothers, John, William, and Thomas McGowan and a sister, Mrs. John Higgins.
