Aged Resident, Mr. Jones, Dies
Formerly Prominent Business Man. Lived Here 40 Years.
Peter E. Jones, 71, former Emmetsburg business man and a resident of this city for the past forty years, died at his home in Emmetsburg at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. While Mr. Jones had been failing in health for the past three years it was not until about four days before his death that his condition became alarming.
The funeral was held Monday. Services were conducted in St. Thomas church at 9 a.m. The assistant pastor, Rev. Thos. Lawless, officiated. Interment was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were John T. Ryan, R. C. Wessar, Paul Thacker, E. M. Thompson, Jos. Joyce and W. T. Branagan. The Foy Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Peter E. Jones was born in North Wales, Ireland, on May 21, 1868. When he was 14 years of age he left Ireland and located in Illinois. He later went to Manson, Iowa, where for a number of years he was employed as a meat cutter. Mr. Jones was united in marriage to Miss Julia Gorman at Fort Dodge on June 28, 1898. Rev. Father Campbell performed the ceremony. They came to this city immediately after their marriage. One son, John , was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jones. He and his family reside at Sacramento, Cal.
Shortly after his arrival in this city Mr. Jones entered into a partnership with the late W. Jackson. The firm conducted a meat market for many years. Later the partnership was dissolved and Mr. Jones entered into a partnership with P. C. Jackman. This partnership continued for some time. In 1938 Mr. Jones retired from active business. The store was located in the building now occupied by Nelsen's Fair Price Grocery.
The deceased was a good citizen. He was known and respected for his fair and honest business methods and for his courtesy and service to the public. Many friends in Emmetsburg regret to learn of his passing. The Democrat joins with others in Emmetsburg in extending sincere sympathy to his surviving widow and his only son.
