Emmetsburg Democrat; Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, IA; Wednesday, August 17, 1904

Death of Mrs. M.B. Kane.

Mrs. Martin B. Kane died at her home near Ayrshire last Wednesday morning after a lingering illness. Mention had, on one or two occasions, been made in the Democrat concerning her condition. Several weeks ago she accompanied Mrs. Joyce, of Emmetsburg township, to Colorado, fondly hoping that the change might produce conditions favorable for the return of the lost treasure of health, but she had waited too long before making the change. She never rallied and returned to her home and loved ones, who soon sorrowfully realized that she could remain with them but a short time. The end came peacefully, and the soul of the faithful wife and mother passed to its eternal reward. The funeral was held at Ayrshire Friday. The services were conducted at the Catholic church at that place, Father Carroll officiating. There was a large attendance. Several from Emmetsburg were present.

Elizabeth Stanton was born at Ixonia, Wisconsin, March 1, 1896 [?]. Her early life was spent in that locality. November 18, 1879, she was united in marriage to Martin B. Kane. Fourteen years ago they came to this county and, with the exception of possibly one or two years, subsequently resided on a farm near Ayrshire. Eight sons and daughters survive her besides the husband. The youngest of the family is seven.

Mrs. Kane was one of the most humble of women. She was ever zealously devoted to the numerous and exacting responsibilities that are worthy of the scrutinizing attention of the exemplary wife and mother. She lived, hoped and toiled that those about here in her own fireside might learn life’s obligations well and thus become worthy and useful members of religion and of society. She did for the community that knew here so long and so favorably all that the watchful, patient, helpful, comforting parent can do. She was taken away at a time when her solicitude was most needed, when the gentle, unerring hand and the solacing heart of the queen of the household can give to those who look to her for guidance those inspirations of love, tenderness and affection that make home so dear to them in after years as well as during the happy days of childhood. Those who are bereft will be comforted to some degree at least by the memory of the active, fruitful, religious life she led and by the assurance, founded on the highest Christian authority, that he, who along has the power to give life and the right to take it away, doeth all things for the best. Mr. Kane and family have the profound sympathy of all who know them in the great affliction that has visited them.
