JOHN AND MARGARET (McINTIRE) HAND
Submitted by Sheila Farrell.

John Hand (1818-1896) was born in the parish of Enniskeen, town of Kingscourt, County Caven, Ireland, in 1818, the son of John and Patty (Duffy) Hand. He emigrated from his native land in 1847, that year of much distress in the Emerald Isle. After arriving in this country, he made his home in New York for several years.

He married Margaret McIntire (1830-1925) in 1850. Margaret came to the United States from Ireland when she was eighteen and lived with her aunt in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1856 John and Margaret crossed the Mississippi and settled in Allamakee County, Iowa, where they lived until 1872. At that time they moved westward to a farm in Great Oak Township, Palo Alto County, where the family lived until John’s death in 1896.

They had eleven children: Mary (born Jan. 29, 1852; died Sept. 23, 1878), Thomas (born July 24, 1854; died Sept. 8, 1900), Catherine (Mulroney, born June 1, 1857; died Dec. 10, 1893), Margaret (Eagan, born Aug. 18, 1858; died Mar. 30, 1941), Bridget (O’Brien, born May 3, 1860; died Dec. 25, 1947), John (born Apr. 8, 1862, died Sept. 26, 1937), James (born May 13, 1864; died Apr 4, 1953), Patrick (born Jan. 26, 1866; died July 7, 1909), Peter (born May 15, 1868; died Sept. 25, 1910), Frank (born Feb. 20, 1870; died Sept. 10, 1955), and Elizabeth (Murray, born Aug. 22, 1872; died June 3, 1960).
