Margaret Driver Smith, age 92, passed away in Bellingham on Saturday, July 26, 2003. She was born in High River, Alberta, Canada, on March 8, 1911, the sixth child of Helen M. and Fred J. Driver, M.D. of Shenandoah, Iowa.

In Iowa in 1934 Margaret graduated as a registered nurse, and married Fred Smith. Their son was born in 1935, and in 1937 the family moved from Omaha to Seattle, where Margaret worked at Swedish Hospital. She completed her public health nursing at the University of Washington and worked for the Seattle-King County Health Department until her retirement.

After retirement, Margaret and Fred built a cabin on the Sauk River in Skagit County, and spent time traveling in Europe and North America.

Margaret was active in the Wildlife Committee of Washington, Western Bass Club, and nursing organizations. She loved to hunt and fish, and enjoyed all outdoor activities. She moved to Bellingham in 1984 to be close to her son and family. Upon moving to Bellingham, Margaret became a member of the St. James Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Fred G. Smith; grandson Lance C. Smith, and all of her brothers and sisters.

Margaret is survived by her son Robert Frederick Smith, M.D. and wife Madeleine; granddaughter Stacia A. Smith, M.D., and husband Peter Mullen; grandson Frederick W. Smith and wife Xia Wei Tang; and great-grandson Wyatt Mullen.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2003, at St. James Presbyterian Church in Bellingham.
