MAN STRUCK BY
ESSEX MAYOR, DEAD
~
Special to the Daily Nonpareil

SHENANDOAH, Ia. July 6 – Isaac Beck, 43 years of age, with a wife and eight children, a farmer, one mile northwest of Essex, was intoxicated near the livery barn on West Main Street Friday evening at 8 o’clock and was causing trouble, when Mayor Dr. O. W. Okerlin was called. The marshal not being around, the Mayor told Beck to go home. Beck began cursing him and drew back to strike in when the Mayor undertook to make the arrest himself. The Mayor was the quickest and struck him. Beck fell over, his head striking the cement walk, causing hemorrhage of the brain. He died at 7 o’clock Saturday morning. The coroner’s jury entirely exonerated the mayor at the inquest Saturday afternoon.
