Carlena Graves, daughter of Hans and Minnie (Rhode) Graves, was born at Melvin, Iowa on May 24, 1895. She lived her youth, attended school and grew to womanhood in the Melvin, Iowa vicinity.

She was united in marriage to Harmon Hitchcock of Sanborn, Iowa on December 14, 1916 at Spencer, Iowa. After their marriage they lived in Sanborn, Iowa and in 1925 they moved to Melvin, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband Harmon, on March 15, 1964 and she continued to make her home in Melvin, Iowa until she entered the Prairie View Home at Sanborn, Iowa on June 6, 1980. She passed away there on June 8, 1980 at the age of 85 years and 14 days.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Ardyce) Leinen of Melvin, Iowa, two sons, Jack Harlan of Melvin, Iowa and Lee Wilham of Fremont, Calif., seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harmon, seven brothers and two sisters.

She was a member of the Melvin United Methodist Church of Melvin, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Wed., June 11 at the United Methodist Church of Melvin with Rev. Paul Hansen officiating.

Casketbearers were Kenneth, Gerald and Arthur Graves, Clarence Schaffer, Clarence Winkel and Kenneth Weness.

The congregation sang, "Be Not Dismayed," and "How Great Thou Art." Mrs. Lavonne Van Houten was organist.

Interment was in Baker Township Cemetery, Melvin, Iowa, with the Sanborn Funeral Home in charge.
