FUNERAL SERVICES FOR EFFIE AFTON CONKEY

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 in the home of her niece, Mrs. J.W. Cravens, for Miss Effie Conkey. The remains arrived on the morning train Friday from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where she was taken ill and died from a paralytic stroke, and were accompanied by her nephew Sidney Kerberg and her life long friend and companion Miss A.L. Thies.

Miss Effie Afton Conkey was born at Lansing, Iowa, April 25 th, 1856 and died at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, February 27th at the age of 72 years, 9 months, 28 days. She was the third child of Oren Sidney and Helen (Walcott) Conkey to whom were born five children, one son and four daughters. Miss Conkey's early life was spent at Lansing where she received her education in the public schools and where she grew to womanhood. She came to Sanborn with her mother, brother and sisters in 1886 and made this her home until 1888 when she went to Oelrich, S.D., to establish a home. For 22 years she resided at Oelrich and in 1910, upon the death of her sister, J.H. Daly, returned to Sanborn to make her home and has resided here continuously since that time. The deceased was affiliated with the Presbyterian church and the funeral services were conducted by the Rev. A.C. Grafton; pastor of the church. She was possessed with a quiet cheerful disposition and unassuming manor which endeared her to all who knew her, always looking on the bright side of life and finding in those about her something to be admired and appreciated. She was able to sift the finer qualities of her friends from their short-comings and to act with charity toward them.

She is survived by one sister and one brother, her parents and two sisters having preceded her in death. A niece Mrs. J.W. Cravens, nephew Sidney Kerberg, and two other nephews who were unable to be present at the services; her life long friend and companion Miss A.L. Thies, and grand-nieces and nephews; Mary Kerberg, Jeanne and James Cravens, and Bernice, Harold and Lorraine Conkey.

Mrs. Walter Luke, Mrs. A.W. Brady and Dr. J.M. Eason and J.S. Sanders composed a quartette who sang two selections, "Going Down the Valley" and "Nearer Still Nearer". Mrs. Luke sang "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" as a solo. Mrs Sawyer presided at the piano during the singing.

A.V. Brady, Earl Mayne, Walter Luke, John Ott, J.M. Eason, Wm. Guse and J.H. Daly acting as pallbearers accompanied the remains to Lansing where internment was made in the family lot besides her parents and sister.

The many beautiful floral tributes spoke silently of the high esteem in which she was held in the community.
