Joan H. Runia passed away on October 26, 2013 at the Prairie View Nursing Home.

Joan was born on August 23, 1930 to Nicholas and Grace (Van Engen) Koel. While growing up she lived with her parents in a number of homes in the Melvin, Ocheyedan and Harris, Iowa areas. After country school she attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI where she received her teaching certificate.

On November 13, 1953 she married John B. Runia and they farmed south of Ocheyedan until John's death in 1997.

After building a new farm home in 1975, an entry in her journal emanates the faith she so clearly lived out: "housecleaning is so easy in our new home – lots more room for everything…Reminds me of the need for regular "housecleaning" of my heart, keeping proper love, attitudes, and priorities, etc. in proper places in my heart, and keeping sin's "dust" out in God's work. Only God's grace allows me to be "clean" and live a life for Him."

Joan was an active member of the Ocheyedan Christian Reformed Church. She truly loved the Lord and lived her life serving others through teaching and volunteering.

She was a beloved wife and mother, an excellent seamstress and an avid gardener. Her family and friends will always remember her homemade bread, donuts, and angel food cake!

Living to cherish her memories are her four daughters, Twila (Doug) Quenzer of Baileys Harbor, WI; Cherilyn (Stan) Rozeboom of Sioux Center, IA; Crystal (Stan) Schalk of Red Deer, AB Canada; Aletha (Bill) Boer of Sibley, IA; 19 grandchildren Rebecca (Dan) Raatz, Caleb (Amy) Quenzer, Josiah (Melissa) Quenzer, Jonathan (Raquel) Quenzer, Elizabeth (Brad) McClain; Kris (Heather) Rozeboom, Kayla (Ben) Haberl, Todd (Allex) Rozeboom; Kyle (Erin) Schalk, Jaben (Sarah) Schalk, Seth (Shannon) Schalk, Chaim Schalk, and Mikiah (Rachel) Schalk; Jeremiah (Stacy) Schutte, Rachel (Samuel) Wilcinot, Timothy Schutte, Bethany Schutte, Jenessa (Carl) Amundson, and Rylie Boer. 18 great-grandchildren; a brother Dorman (Jeanne) Koel of Rock Rapids, IA; a sister Nella (Doyle) Duin of Fort Collins, CO; sister-in-law Joan Koel of Primghar.

She was preceded in death by her husband John B. Runia, her brother Julius Koel, 2 infant grandchildren - Micah Quenzer, and Kara Rozeboom.
