Derrek J. Runia was born on November 19, 2007, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is the son of Corwin and Amy (Van Dam) Runia of rural Melvin, Iowa.

Derrek went to heaven to be with Jesus on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at the age of 22 days.

Those left to cherish his memories are his parents: Corwin and Amy Runia of rural Melvin, Iowa; his paternal grandparents: Alvin and Mary (Zimmer) Runia of Melvin, Iowa; his maternal grandparents: Harold and Marcella (Rylaarsdam) Van Dam of Edgerton, Minnesota; paternal uncles and aunts: Jeffrey and Rachael Runia and their three children, Audrey Runia, Bonnie and Jason Joukman; maternal uncles and aunts: Alan and Shela Van Dam, Mark and Paula Van Dam, Curtis and Kim Van Dam.
He was preceded in death by Timothy, Lisa and Emily.
