Richard Hoekstra, age 71, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2008, at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.

Memorial service will be Friday, November 28, 2008, at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan. Rev. Douglas Harding officiating

Richard Hoekstra was born on January 19, 1937, in Ocheyedan, Iowa. He was the son of Ike and Esther (Hansen) Hoekstra. He lived his youth in Ocheyedan where he attended the Ocheyedan Public School and graduated from high school.

He was united in marriage to Marilyn Noble of Ocheyedan, on August 24, 1957. They lived in Ocheyedan all of their lives.

Richard was with the Ocheyedan Fire Department for 33 years. He was the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery Sexton for 43 years, where he dug graves, mostly by hand, from 1959 to 2002.

He was an EMT for 15 years. He was a member of the Park Board, Ocheyedan Housing Board and Lutheran Church Boards. He was a member of the Town and Country Club and Mixed Doubles Bowling League for 33 years. He was known as an all around Handy Man in town and was a Cistern Contractor.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife: Marilyn; one son and daughter-in-law: Brian and Cheryl Hoekstra of Ocheyedan, IA; one daughter and son-in-law: Paula and Tom Howard of Ocheyedan, IA; seven grandchildren; three brothers: Garland Hoekstra of Kingsville, TX, Donald Hoekstra of Hopkins, MN, Stanley Hoekstra of Tallahassee, FL, two sisters: Patti (Norman) Barkve of Tallahassee, FL, Jody (Bill) Mackey of De Smet, SD.

He was preceded in death by one infant son: Steven Ray; two infant brothers: Leroy and Daniel; and his parents.
