Ranzie Hoekstra, age 77, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.

Funeral Services will be Friday, November 5, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. the Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan. Pastor Aldon Kuiper officiating.

Ranzie Hoekstra was born on July 30, 1933, in Brewster, Minnesota. He was the son of Cyrus and Jeanette (Mellema) Hoekstra. He lived his youth in rural Brewster where he attended a country school and graduated from Brewster High School.

Ranzie served in the United States Army Reserve Corp. where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, for three years and was honorably discharged.

He was united in marriage to Barbara DeHamer of Sibley, Iowa, while he was on leave from the service, on February 24, 1954, at the Sibley Christian Reformed Church. They lived in Chandler, Minnesota for two years, two years in Rushmore, Minnesota, and then 15 years in Harris, Iowa, before moving to Ocheyedan, Iowa.

Ranzie farmed until moving to Ocheyedan. He drove truck for Sathers for many years before purchasing his own truck in 2000, and retiring in 2008.

Ranzie was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan. He enjoyed volunteering for Christian Service Organizations, doing mission work in Cary, Mississippi. He was a member of the American Legion.

Ranzie liked to grow roses and amaryllis. He also enjoyed spending time visiting people in the nursing homes.

He enjoyed traveling across the United States with Barb in their motor home. He was a Twins fan. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sports activities.

He will be remembered not only as a great husband, dad and grandfather, but also as a friend to his children.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 56 years: Barbara Hoekstra of Ocheyedan, IA; his children: Ivan and Peggy Hoekstra of Ocheyedan, IA, and their children: Adam and Elizabeth Hoekstra and their children: Colton and Bailey, Nathan and Kimberly Hoekstra and their children: Macey and Kennedy, Cole and Kayla Hoekstra and their child: Amelia; Clyde and Tamera Hoekstra of Ocheyedan, IA, and their son: Tyler and Casey Hoekstra; Linda and James Horan of Omaha, NE, and their children: Nicole and Jayme Horan; 4 brothers: Lawrence and Nancy Hoekstra of Fridley, MN, Burnell and Lydia Hoekstra of Florida, Alvin and Marilyn Hoekstra of Franklin, TN, Jerry Hoekstra of Hinckley, MN; 3 sisters: Lena and Ben Dommeyer of Hudson, WI, Mary Hoekstra of Israel, Janet and Steve Weinstein of Granada Hills, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son: Randall (at birth).
